Bancoora SLSC is a non-profit volunteer organisation providing beach patrol to Bancoora Beach, Breamlea Victoria, Australia on weekends and public holidays over the summer months – late November to late April each year. In addition there are lifeguards on weekdays patrolling the beach over late December to Australia Day each year.
Bancoora SLSC offer members to get involved in the nippers and young gun programs providing water safety lessons and learning the sport and techniques required to become a lifesaver. This is offered for children aged 6 to 18 years.
Breamlea is nestled between Torquay and Barwon Heads and Bancoora beach is situated in Breamlea. The beach gets its name from the SS Bancoora which ran aground in this area in 1891. The cargo included a young elephant, a rhinoceros, monkeys and parrots. All were landed safely and taken by lorry to Geelong.
In 1962, a surf lifesaving club was formed at Bancoora Beach, with clubrooms being built in 1963. On 8 April 1987, the original clubhouse was gutted by fire. For the next four seasons the club operated from a tin shed, until the present building was opened on 25 October 1992
